These are older properties, built as far as I can tell
in the late 1890's.
They are set just off a country lane which itself leads off a larger lane.
This thorough-fair gets busy twice a day - and that's it. By busy i mean
about 20 cars. This doesn't of course include the tractors chugging up
the hill every now and again.
The fields have been out to the Charolle beef for longer than anyone
I have spoken to can remember. Most of the animals are for veal; but
the intensive press and barns are not usual in this area. Two farmers
back I took half the rent in veal from the local butchery cooperative.
The land sits pretty much on top of a small hill falling away to a
fresh water lake on the East side. This lake was formed from a stream
by a neighbor as a commercial sport fishing venture.
The South side is bordered by a smaller field and very small 'pied a'
terre'. Last I knew this was owned by a florist from Charolle but I've
never seen anyone there. To the West is the rural lane and South West
Famile Jean-Deau who are my friends and good neighbors.
There is a small hamlet of about 8 houses to the North and, a little
nearer another property not lived in for some years.
There are views across fields to the East and West over the small valley
and fields to rising wooded hills.
I always seem to buy properties near civil airfields and there is one
about 20k away. On Saturdays there are sometimes flights in and out
but no heavy traffic. On occasion a flight of Mirage will streak overhead
on the Lyon / Paris circuit.
There is quite a bit of wildlife around including wild boar in the
undergrowth. Shooting rights bring in theory €150 a year
but I've not been particularly stringent in collecting this. It's
a single sheet of paper issued by the local equivalent of a bailiff.
My only stricture was that no birds of prey are shot. There have
been a pair of buzzards around the woods since before I purchased
Le Bois Coupe.
There are a wide range of birds around, including duck on the fishing
lake. There are few rabbits as there is nothing really to attract them,
but lots of small deer.
Le Bois Coupe isn't a rural idle but is fairly quiet and definitely
not on the tourist track. |
